The Olympics of 1964 and 1976 are not the only testaments to the city’s reputation for being an athletic town. Visible both night and day for miles around, the new Bergisel ski jump is also a symbol of Innsbruck’s modern sporting prowess. The ski jump, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, sits on its throne high above the Olympic city of Innsbruck on historical Bergisel hill. This modern ski jumping facility is 47 metres high and besides spectacular architecture also offers a 360 degree panoramic restaurant.
The ice stadium, the football stadium built for Euro 2008, the recently adapted bob sleigh and toboggan run are competition venues and available anytime for European and World Championships. Not for nothing will Innsbruck play host to the Winter 2012 Youth Olympics!

With pleasant cycle paths along the River Inn, gentle mountain bike trails, countless hiking and walking paths as well as the nearby ski resorts, when it comes to activities for everyone, Innsbruck’s got it covered. But there are also Alpine crossings, demanding mountain bike tours, downhill runs and more, many of which start in Innsbruck. The wellknow Ötztal Bike Marathon was in fact started in Innsbruck and Mutters.
With 9 ski resorts nearby it is easy to see how Innsbruck can claim 40,000 active skiers in a city of 120,000 inhabitants. Many students spend one or two semesters in Innsbruck in order to take advantage of the myriad sporting opportunities in Innsbruck and the surrounding area.
